Sometimes the origin of a piece and how an object is made is as present in it as what the piece represents or its function. This is how I feel about our Intertwined Initials pieces. The idea came about in quite a magical way. I had set out to create a monogram charm—initials for an individual, decidedly straightforward. But as I began to play around with fonts and designs, I accidentally pasted an initial right on top of another. A serendipitous accident. And the discovery of something that had quite a different impact than the letters set alone.
The journey was then to try to understand the ways the letters connect. How they interact with each other. Each letterform has such personality. Could this work and be legible? And could our artisans carve and cast and solder these custom pieces, one by one? I’m glad I didn’t let these questions stop the creative process, because you never know.
We tinkered on the letter combinations for many months, until we felt like they all worked well. Our artisans have to combine the letters in just the right way in order to solder them so they sit well on the base of the charm. We were so delighted that they kept going on the harder combinations, eventually mastering all.
The design was released with the name Intertwined Initials, which just felt right. The road to the birth of this custom piece has given it a lot of gravitas. It is a very intentional piece. Each charm or pendant holds an emotional memory beyond the letterforms, deeper into the mystery of love: the dance of the intertwined letters (which I sometimes refer to as a “lovers knot”) seems to carry an energy of this invisible force—our magnetic bond to one another.
I love how classic and gender-neutral this design is (in all its forms, as we have expanded the collection to include several different bases). Whether you go the traditional monogram route (your own initials), or entangle your initials with your partner’s (or friends, or siblings—anyone you are connected to!) this pendant carried all the love conveyed by those letters in a unified form.
The Intertwined Initials celebrate not just how we are bound to each other, but also how we are homeward bound to ourselves, and to love itself. The glorious tangle of initials holds close the dynamic joy in giving love and being loved—something so powerful, something to never forget.
The pendant necklace has become such a staple part of jewelry accessorizing that many necklace wearers are seeking out ways to expand a pendant collection or start one. This is easy to do because individual pendants now come in a wide variety of designs and themes. It’s also trendy to wear various pendants and chains together in unique ways, meaning you can choose to wear two or more pendants at the same time.
The desire to be more fashionable with pendants can lead to the common question of how to go about attaching a pendant to a necklace of your choice. Sure, you can always slide a pendant onto a chain, but we’re talking about attaching the pendant semi-permanently or permanently in one place so that the necklace looks just the way you want. Consider all of the following attachment methods and choose one or more to create a unique necklace look.
Jump Ring Method
The jump ring is a small connector piece that is commonly used in jewelry making to connect a pendant to a chain. They are usually circular in shape, but they can be made into other shapes such as ovals or squares. Connecting jump rings is typically a simple task requiring a pair of jewelry pliers. Using the pliers, pull the ring slightly apart to create enough space to slip the connector onto one of the links in the necklace. Next, slide jump ring onto the pendant’s connector. Use the pliers to close the jump ring securely.
A bail is a necklace connector that is typically more decorative and weightier than the average jump ring. Bails come in various styles, and they serve the purpose of helping to flatten the pendant against the body when its hanging on the neck, keeping it from twisting around. There are two types of bails – standard and pinched. Standard bails can be used with jump rings to attach a pendant. Pinched bails usually have their own mechanism for opening the bail and attaching it to the pendant. Using this method may require some familiarity with jewelry making techniques.
Head Pin and Eye Pin Method
Head pins are jewelry making wires that come in various thicknesses. It is typically used for pendants with drilled holes. The pin is inserted into the hole of the pendant, and then bent into a lop shape for attaching to a chain. Pliers are needed to wrap the end of the wire around the head of the pin for closure.
The eye pin is a wire with a similar look to the head pin. The difference is that eye pins have a round loop at the top that opens like a jump ring. It is necessary to bend the straight part of the wire to create a secure connection. This method is somewhat time consuming and requires learning a jewelry making technique.
Charm Clip Method
Considering that all of the above methods require patience and a bit of skill with using jewelry pliers, you may be wondering if there is an easier way to connect pendants and necklaces. Yes, there is, and it’s called a charm clip. These clips are small jewelry connectors that already have closures built-in that are easy to open and close. They connect to jump rings that come with the pendant and can be used with corded and chain necklaces.
The warmth and beauty of gold plated jewelry is appealing to just about everyone who is attracted to its gleaming luxuriousness. Its popularity means that you can find jewelry pieces that are gold plated just about anywhere. However, only the finest quality jewelry is gold plated with 14k or 18k gold. Collecting gold plated jewelry can make you happy, but over time, you may notice that your jewelry pieces are becoming tarnished and losing their luster. Instead of tossing them in the “never wear again” pile, you can take steps to restore your jewelry and enjoy wearing it once more.
Why Does Gold Plated Jewelry Tarnish?
When gold is exposed to light and air, it begins what is known as an oxidization process. The tendency for gold to oxidize under these conditions is a natural one and every time you wear your jewelry the oxidizing goes into effect, eventually causing discoloration. The natural oil from your skin as well as dirt, dust and chemicals from lotions and other moisturizers also contribute to tarnishing.
Cleaning Your Jewelry
The best, and easiest, way to remove tarnish from gold plated jewelry is to clean the jewelry piece. There are three proven and safe methods for cleaning this type of jewelry.
Cleaning Method 1: Soap and Water
When your gold-plated jewelry is only a bit dull but not too bad to look at, you can do a light cleaning using soap and water. All you need is a bowl or container big enough to hold the jewelry. Fill the bowl with warm water and pour in some mild liquid soap. Mix to distribute the soap. Put the jewelry into the container and let it soak for a few minutes. Remove the jewelry and rub all surface areas with a soft cloth. You can use a toothbrush to clean any hard-to-reach areas.
Once you are satisfied that dirt and grime are gone, rinse the jewelry with warm water. Dry jewelry with a lint-free cloth.
Cleaning Method 2: Jewelry Polishing Cloth
These are specialty cloths made of natural fibers designed for cleaning and polishing jewelry. Following instructions, you rub areas that are dull and dirty with the cloth to remove tarnish.
Cleaning Method 3: Baking Soda and Salt
For some jewelry pieces, a deep clean may be necessary due to extreme tarnishing. If this is the case, you can turn to this method for a solution.
Here’s what you need:
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
Step 1: Line the bowl with the foil, making sure the shiny side is face up.
Step 2: Add the salt and baking soda to the bowl.
Step 3: Add hot water to the bowl and make sure there is enough water to cover the jewelry. Let the salt and baking soda completely dissolve.
Step 4: Place jewelry into the bowl and let it sit for several minutes.
Step 5: Watch black and yellow flakes from the gold-plated jewelry float towards the foil. This means the solution is working.
Step 6: Remove jewelry from water and rub it with a lint-free cloth.
Step 7: Rinse the jewelry under running warm water and dry it with another lint-free cloth. You are done!
Protecting Your Gold-Plated Jewelry
Keep your gold-plated jewelry looking good longer by letting lotions and moisturizers completely dry before wearing it. Also, store the jewelry in protective jewelry bags and/or boxes that don’t expose it to air.

Sterling Silver, Brass and Bronze
At Waxing Poetic, we always use the finest alloys on the market for our sterling silver, brass, and bronze pieces.
We do regularly get questions about these from our customers on the best practices for maintaining their jewelry, and will answer some of the most common questions here in hopes that it will help you enjoy your jewelry for even longer.
How do I clean my Waxing Poetic jewelry, particularly bronze pieces?
For cleaning, it is safe to use a polishing cloth lightly; water is not recommended. For sterling silver pieces, you can use a standard silver cleaner, if a polishing cloth is not enough.
How do you keep jewelry from tarnishing, particularly brass jewelry?
Though it contains anti-tarnishing agents, all fine sterling silver does eventually tarnish with age and exposure to various elements. Brass or bronze jewelry will tarnish more quickly than sterling silver, but can easily have its shine restored.
CARE FOR HEAVY TARNISH BUILD-UP
Regular maintenance of your jewelry will help keep pieces from building excessive tarnish. In the case of heavy build-up, create a natural dip to lift tarnish:
- Line a small dish with aluminum foil and fill it with very hot water.
- Shake in some baking soda, approximately ¼ teaspoon.
- Soak metals for approximately 2-5 minutes. The baking soda will react with the aluminum to lift tarnish. Monitor as it is soaking to be sure the oxidization is not stripped from the details of the jewelry.
- Dry the piece thoroughly (moisture can contribute to tarnish) then polish and buff with a jewelry polishing cloth.
Is it bad to wear brass jewelry?
The short answer is, no. That said, there are ways to help your brass pieces continue to look nice and last longer into the future, with just a little care. First of all, do not submerge your brass jewelry into water. This will only make it tarnish faster. As well, try not to polish your brass frequently, as it can remove the finish and patina.
Can I wear my brass jewelry in the shower?
We recommend that you do not wear any of your jewelry in the shower, hot tub, sauna, ocean, or swimming pool, as moisture accelerates the tarnishing of metal.
Will lotion or soaps tarnish my jewelry?
Sometimes the chemical makeup of skin oils combined with lotions may also contribute to tarnishing, so apply fragrance and hair spray prior to putting on jewelry.
Why is some of my brass jewelry so much darker?
Boiled brass features a naturally darker finish that develops over time and adds to the piece. These items are low maintenance as frequent polishing can remove the finish.
Pearls, Stones and Crystals
Pearls, stones and crystals are fragile and require more care than other types of jewelry. Use a soft, lint-free cloth, not a polishing cloth, to wipe your jewelry after you take it off. If your pearls, stones, or crystals have become dull, use a damp cloth to gently pat them clean and then let them dry flat. Do not use any chemicals or cleaners. Check the cord on strung pieces regularly to be sure it is not fraying. Fragrance, lotions and hair spray should be applied prior to wearing your jewelry.
Excessive heat and moisture can damage leather. Avoid wearing leather jewelry in the shower, hot tub, sauna, ocean or swimming pool as these can easily damage your leather. Over time, leather will darken from normal wear, water exposure, your skin’s oils and lotions.
Our plated jewelry is made by covering a base metal with a thin layer of gold or sterling silver. Over time, it will eventually wear away despite your best attempts to preserve it. Plating is mutable and will tarnish: this is not a bad thing and in fact can be quite lovely. Lightly wipe your plated jewelry with a soft jewelry polishing cloth to gently restore shine. This will help eliminate any dirt or dust from accumulating on the surface and wearing away the plated layer. Do not polish plated jewelry often; the more you polish, the more the plating is worn away. Keep plated jewelry away from hard surfaces, as bumps and scratches will cause the plated layer to wear away faster. Do not bathe, swim, soak, sauna, or steam in your plated jewelry. Not only will this tarnish the plating, it can actually hasten its separation from the metal below and cause further oxidization. Store your plated jewelry in our Waxing Poetic pouch or store in a soft material that will prevent scratches.
HOW TO USE A POLISHING CLOTH
Regular polishing with a polishing cloth along with proper storage will help maintain the finish and reduce the natural buildup of tarnish on metals. Follow these steps to use a polishing cloth:
- Use the inside of the cloth to loosen and lift tarnish. The interior of the cloth is treated with a cleaner that is safe for the keepsake quality of Waxing Poetic jewelry, and the cloth is woven of soft material that will not scratch metal. For heavier areas of tarnish, moisten the interior of the cloth slightly with water when polishing.
- After polishing, buff the piece with the dry exterior of the cloth to wipe away the lifted tarnish and bring out the finish and luster of the metal
The summer of 2021 is sure to be a summer unlike any other you’ve experienced. While exploring all of your summertime possibilities, you can also explore some of the biggest jewelry trends for this summer. We’ve identified seven of the best jewelry trends for the summer of 2021.
Pearls are one of the hottest jewelry trends right now, and that may have something to do with a certain powerful VP making them a part of her signature look. But don’t think that your only options are wearing a traditional string of pearls. This new trend allows for lots of creative jewelry design with pearls being a central focus. The re-imagined pearl necklace can be a sprinkling of daisies on a brass chain, or a cluster of white luminescence tucked inside of a faux oyster shell. They can also be a way to express your feelings of faith. You don’t have to conform to a specific look to enjoy pearls, so feel free to choose more creative styles.
Bees are essential to the health of our planet and preserving bees and bee habitats is a worthy cause to support. You can share your love of bees and spread awareness by wearing bee jewelry. These are jewelry pieces that feature the bee (or bee life) in a prominent way. Love pearls? Wear a gorgeous Bee Brave Honeypearl charm with any length or style of chain and feel great! Other summer bees’ jewelry ideas include honeycomb earrings and cuffs and Bee Saved elephant charms and pendants.
Round and round and round we go, where it stops…well, there’s no stopping the trend of wearing spherical shapes. Round jewelry pieces are having their moment and you can easily jump in on this trend with any piece that has a round shape. You can go with a 3D sphere shape like the gem in this birthstone charm. Or how about this captivating Ensemble bracelet with silver faceted cut mirror spheres?
Single Statement Earring
The single earring trend has gone big, and by big we mean the choice of earring size. For those who love cutting edge fashion looks, here’s an opportunity to make a big statement by wearing one fabulous, dangling earring on your left or right ear. Happily, there are lots of enigmatic earring designs that allow you to self-express your personality with as much flash or glam as you desire.
Big and Bold Chains
Sticking with the bigger is better trend, chunkier chains are in and you can find this look represented in necklaces and bracelets. The Myth of Separation necklace and bracelet and the ultra-cool Peace In Unity bracelet are great examples of how to elegantly pull off this look.
Bangles and Cuffs
Do you already love bangles and cuff bracelets? Well, here’s your chance to go all in with both and indulge in getting new bangles featuring uplifting symbols such as a beautiful butterfly or blossoming bloom. Enjoy two trends in one with a cuff bracelet engraved with motivational words.
Metal jewelry that looks a bit rough or banged up is really a good thing, which is why it’s a part of this summer’s hottest trends. Textures vary from mild rumpling to full out crumpling and those imperfections are what makes these pieces look so cool.
Have you ever wondered: what’s the difference between a bangle and a bracelet?
Lots of people wonder the same thing. This question probably comes from the fact that bangles are similar to bracelets, but they are not generally called a bracelet, so if they aren’t a bracelet, then what are they, exactly?
Well, let’s get to the bottom of this jewelry mystery and give you some answers.
The beautiful bangle has deep roots in Southeast Asia, where they have been a jewelry adornment since 2600 BC. Yes, that is a very long time. Modern bangles are worn by millions of women and men throughout the world. So, it goes without saying that this style of jewelry continues to be extremely popular.
Bangles are distinctive for their solid metal design and structure. To create a bangle a skilled jewelry artisan must know how to heat, bend and shape a thin or thick piece of metal into a near-perfect circle or oval shape. Worn around the wrist, bangles are known for being easy to slip on and off the wrist. They also vary in design, width and closure style. Some bangles have no closure whatsoever, while others features a latch closure or hinge closure. And some bangles are partially open in back to allow the user to adjust the fit.
While there are many ways a creative artisan can make a bangle look, the one thing they all have in common is a hard metal structure.
Bangle Style Options
Shopping for bangles is a fun experience because there are so many great designs. A bangle can have a smooth, shiny surface or consist of two pieces of metal twisted together and curved into a half-circle. Or it can be a minimalistic style made from brass or silver.
Bangles can feature intricate engravings or be encrusted with gleaming crystals. Many women (and some men) love wearing three or more bangles together, which is always fun and fashionable.
What is a Bracelet?
Wearing bracelets is a practice that goes all the way back to Ancient Egypt and they’ve been a favorite arm adornment ever since. The most distinctive thing that identifies a bracelet is its flexibility. Instead of hard metal throughout, the bracelet is made up of interconnected chain links that freely move when the wrist moves. As most jewelry wearers know, bracelet links can be small and intricate or larger in size. Because chain links can be removed, bracelets are often easier to fit to size than a hard, inflexible bangle.
Also, unlike most bangles, the chain link bracelet requires closure hardware to make it stay on the wrist.
Bracelet Style Options
There are numerous flexible bracelet designs and that’s good news for those who love collecting and wearing them. Creativity is abundant when it come to crafting fashionable bracelets. Sure, there are some tried and true styles that are timeless, but jewelry artisans are always coming up with new design concepts. This makes it easy to find bracelets that match your personal sense of style.
Current trends can also play a role in what bracelet styles are most popular. For instance, pearls are among today’s most popular jewelry trends and this pretty Moon Daisy bracelet shows how to use pearls to create a fun, unique look. Chunky bracelets with large links are another trend that is capturing lots of attention.
Now that you know the difference between bangles and bracelets, you can have all kinds of fun collecting both styles.
