Girls Inc. Externship at Waxing Poetic
Waxing Poetic is company built by and for, women. So, when Girls' Inc. approached us with the idea to work with a young woman in our community, we jumped at the opportunity. Alisa, our extern, was so eager to learn the ins and outs about how WP is operated, and did a fantastic job learning the ropes.
We took her throughout the process of how our products come to life, from design, to purchasing, to sales and marketing and the retail floor. Alisa's favorite department was the inventory and purchasing (she is a Math whiz and loves data). She was able to track an order, which we then gifted to her on her last day (surprise!).
We feel deeply and strongly about encouraging women to be business savvy, nurture their entrepreneurial instincts, and forge a drive within them for success and independence. We are confident that this bright, lovely young lady will go far, and on to do great great things.

A note from Alisa
My name is Alisa Lemere, I am 15 years old and I am an extern at Waxing Poetic. My 4 weeks at waxing poetic have been an amazing experience. I have learned about all the components that make a successful business function. I got to spend time with the sales team, design team, accountants, customer service team, and many other wonderful people.
My favorite part about my time here was working with the Purchasing Team, Lisa and Ashley. I enjoyed entering in inventory and purchasing the products that are needed. Overall this experience has been amazing and I loved being a part of this awesome company.

5 ways to incorporate poetry into your everyday life
1. Take note of your surroundings
Notice the way dew collects on the spider webs in your garden and how that looks in the early morning light. The way flowers close at twilight, how birds sing song at any moment but mostly how they sound on Saturday morning and the way your pillows feel when you lay down at night.
2. Breathe
We all work so hard, tend to get in a routine, and take for granted something that is so simple like air. Stop and just take a really, deep, healing breath. Be conscious of your breath and feel the way the air fills your lungs, as you do this, quietly say thank you to yourself for taking those breaths and feel grateful for air, good, fresh, clean air. Feels good, doesn’t it?
3. Write
When feeling something, write it down. These are the moments and feelings you may want to look back on in another stage of your life. It’s very therapeutic to let go of emotions (whatever they may be.) Like bubbles, they need to be able to float away after surfacing and this is a great practice for those of us who hold on to those emotion bubbles.
4. Read
Become more poetic in your life, whether it’s a compilation of actual poetry (here is a great one to try), book on business, or inner-self work, it can spark something within you, motivate, and in turn, make you feel poetic. If you are living, you are poetic. Even if you don’t recognize it in that moment. Quietly speaking a favorite quote or mantra to your self is a great practice as well.
5. Repeat
Do it often, make the time. Make it a purpose and a habit to do these things for your self. You deserve it.
Notes from the Designer

Summer skies and heat set the stage for memories in the making, with friends and family all around. This is when we take time from the blessing of longer days to indulge in the sunshine and sights that take us to a place of feeling free and honoring the gift of loved ones. These breaks in time remind us of the importance to get out from the typical routine, loosen up a bit, and expand our experiences. Trends for summer celebrate fresh themes with mint and rose tones, fruits, and lots of texture symbolizing nature and growth from new beginnings.
More structured shapes and icons like tags and anchors pair well with natural looks to bring a contemporary contrast to natural elements and textures. Geometry, like angled edges in typography and patterns like polka-dots feel seasonal and set a tone to compliment organic styles.
Messaged themes also fit summer trends for a more literal expression of a feeling or place; for instance, a state charm or personalized piece that is a direct reference to a journey.

Poem of the Week - The Summer Day by Mary Oliver
At Waxing Poetic, we talk a lot about noticing things, and we bring this into practice through jewelry that represents these moments. These “little pieces” to us are like offerings, or, in a way, prayers.
Today's poem holds that the act of attention is a form of prayer. It ends with a beautiful question of intention, and reminds us of the sacredness of the everyday and this one wild and precious life we are living.
The Summer Day
by Mary Oliver
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
What’s hot: Planetary Traits Birthday Gifts

Inspired by astrological signs, the characteristic traits of each and the notion that you may not identify with just one of these, but many of them (sometimes, or all at once), these cuffs have been on our hot gift list since they were released. Some find that the month intended for them doesn’t fit their personality (and that’s ok!)… we encourage you to wear and gift as you wish. We have many facets, and we believe a good gift notices these. We created this beautiful, simple, cuff for just that purpose.
From our Poet
Start something. Or keep it going.
The little way leads to wonder, remember?
In fairytales, in life…
The tiny pieces matter much. Small doors open wide worlds.
Yes yes yes.

Happy 4th of July!
4 things to be thankful for this 4th of July
1. Family, whether near or far, here or not here, we are thankful for them all.
2. Time. In the sense of taking it. Enjoying the moments and reveling in the peace (or chaos) of your beautiful life.
3. Miracles, of varying magnitude and scale. The little ones running around your yard, the big ones that you can’t believe happened (but they did.)
4. Corn on the cob… with butter. YES. Okay- that is silly but what’s 4th of July without corn on the cob?? And what’s corn on the cob without butter?? (A tragedy. That’s what.)
